Oceana's in Belize VP with Guinea Grass StudentsThe standard six and five students of Guinea Grass Village, Orange Walk hosted Oceana’s VP Audrey Matura Shepherd at a special lecture on Belize’s Marine Ecosystem on Thursday, January 20, 2011.  The event organized by the school was to allow the students to learn more about the wonders of Belize’s marine resources.  The over 60 students where shown videos taken of Belize’s marine creatures and were given a talk about the importance of our marine resources during a lecture entitled From Coast to Ocean.

Of the sixty-two students present only three had ever visited the cayes and snorkeled the reef areas.  This was made possible through a trip sponsored by Oceana in 2011.  As Part of Oceana’s continued work to educate the young population about the importance of its marine resources, especially the world’s second largest barrier reef it will be sponsoring a similar trip for the students.  Twenty-four standard six students with academic excellence will be invited to participate in a one-day reef trip so they can appreciate firsthand the beauty and economic value of the reef to their heritage and livelihood and the country’s wealth.
