Belmopan, Belize. On the occasion of the third anniversary of the People’s Referendum, Belizeans are being invited to a FREE concert showcasing the brightest Belizean musicians who will appear onstage together for the first time. The event is scheduled for Sunday March 1st at the Memorial Park in Belize City between the hours of two and six pm. The People’s Referedum, organized by the conservation community and supported by both the business sector and general public alike remains the only national poll ever taken on the issue of offshore oil in Belize. Almost thirty thousand Belizeans voted in the referendum and the results were clear. An overwhelming majority (approximately 90%) voted no to offshore oil in Belize. Despite that outcome, as recent as January 2015, the Ministry of Energy continues to express its desire to explore and exploit oil in Belize’s world renown marine environment despite the significant and permanent risks involved. At the concert, a stellar line- up which includes the Garifuna Collective; Tanya Carter; Melonie Gillett; Positive Vibz; Young C; Consigo; TR Shine, Nello Player backed up by Verge of Umbra and Jacki Castillo will rock the stage to “Rock the Vote”. These amazing artists are adding their voices to the tens of thousands of Belizeans who continue to say “NO” to offshore oil in order to protect Belizean jobs in fishing and tourism; quality and way of life as well as Belize’s economically and ecologically significant marine resources.
