5 Ways You Can Act this Ocean Action Month

June 8th is observed annually as World Oceans Day, a moment to not only celebrate the beauty and life of our oceans, but also to increase awareness of the threats our oceans face and how we can help to protect and preserve them for generations to come. At Oceana, protecting our oceans is what we do every day, so this year, we’ve pumped up the advocacy and dubbed June as Ocean Action Month!

It’s a month-long celebration of the incredible beauty, biodiversity, and importance of our oceans, and more importantly, to encourage YOU to take up your responsibility and act to protect our precious marine resources.

Here in Belize, our sea is our life! Our barrier reef is not just a natural wonder, it’s our lifeline, identity, and a driving force that fuels our economy. We all depend on the sea — from the fishers working for a fresh catch, to the tour guides showing the world our underwater treasures, and families relying on it for healthy meals. And that’s why it’s our collective responsibility to take charge in protecting what sustains us.

This month, Oceana invites you to be part of the solution to putting a stop to the threats our oceans face. It’s not a job for our decisionmakers only; we can impact change right we are. Here are some simple yet impactful ways you can act this Ocean Action Month:

1. Say No to Unnecessary Single-Use Plastics

Even though Belize has made strides with implementing a plastic ban, there is no real change because of lack of enforcement. Plastic pollution is still a threat to our natural environment and marine life. But you can help change this! This month, carry a reusable water bottle and take your own shopping bags and metal/bamboo straws and utensils. Every time you say no to unnecessary single-use plastic, you’re helping to keep our sea cleaner and marine animals safe.

2. Advocate for Ocean Protection

Did you know Oceana is campaigning for a Constitutional Reform in Belize that will include public consultation prior to any repeal of the current moratorium on offshore oil? Find out more here and how you can join us in advocating for your voice to help shape Belize’s future. Whether it’s supporting marine conservation efforts, attending a public consultation, volunteering at a community cleanup, or pledging to take action, YOUR ACTIONS MATTER.

3. Participate in a Community Cleanup

No matter where we live in Belize, our actions impact our sea. Inland and river plastic pollution can eventually become ocean pollution. So, grab those cleaning supplies and join a cleanup activity or organize your own with family, friends, or your community group.

4. Support Sustainably Caught Seafood

Ask where your seafood comes from. Choose seafoods that are caught using sustainable fishing practices and within their fishing season, where applicable. When you respect closed fishing seasons and support responsible fishers, you help protect marine species and ensure that future generations can enjoy the same abundance or better.

5. Join the Wave

Ocean Action Month isn’t just about one-time efforts; it’s about establishing personal habits that protect our marine resources for generations to come. Oceana is a global organization that gets stuff done every day for our oceans, but we are only impactful when we have your support. Sign up to become an Oceana Wavemaker and stay informed of our campaigns and ways you can join us in making waves!

Our sea doesn’t need a few people doing things — it needs all of us doing our part.
