United Front Against Plastic Waste
Plastic pollution remains one of the biggest threats globally, Belize is no exception the devastating impacts of this. As the population continues to grow (on average 2% per year according to the Statistical Institute of Belize), so does the demand for plastic products. And, of course, with more use comes more pollution. However, Oceana is proud to highlight the collective efforts of communities, partners, and organizations dedicated to turning the tide on plastic pollution.
This year, we partnered for cleanup activities with several primary and high schools, local businesses, organizations, and government agencies, including Southern Environmental Association, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Corozal and Dangriga Town Councils, Diamonds International, Crocodile Research Coalition, Sea of Life, HECOPAB, and the Department of the Environment. We especially enjoyed and appreciated working with our Wavemaker clubs at Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College, Corozal Community College, Corozal Junior College, Escuela Secundaria Técnica México, Independence Junior College and High School, St. John’s College Junior College, and St. Catherine’s Academy. These Wavemakers have been instrumental in driving environmental awareness and action within their student population. The hope for a cleaner, more sustainable Belize lies in each of our hands.
Oceana remains committed to holding the Government of Belize accountable for fully implementing and maintaining the ban on single-use plastics and polystyrene in the food sector.
Partner Spotlight
Oceana supported the efforts of Sea of Life to conduct a comprehensive audit of plastic packaging consumption, pollution, and waste management across Belize through its Trash Blitz. Findings gathered from these activities will inform Sea of Life’s upcoming national report, set for publication in 2025. Fun fact: Sea of Life was our 2024 Partner of the Year!
