Belize’s Better Bag Initiative

Around the world, more than one billion single-use plastic bags are given away for free every day. Every year, hundreds of millions of these same plastic bags find their way to our oceans and seas acting as “silent killers” to so many marine animals. Plastic in the ocean is often confused as food by many marine animals. Once consumed, the plastic blocks the digestive tract of these animals resulting in death more often than not. When a turtle consumes plastic, the toxins released due to the blockage of the digestive tract causes the turtle to be bouyant, therefore preventing it from diving for food.

This World Oceans Day, help to lower the number of plastic bags that end up in the sea by using your reusable bags at stores! Join the Better Bag Initiative by taking your own reusable bags to the grocery store and receive discounts at select stores! As Belizeans, it’s nice to boast about our beautiful marine environment, but it’s even better to take action and DO something to protect it!?
