The Best Catch: Stories from Belizean Fishers

Dale Fairweather is a well-known commercial fisher from the Belize District. In our conversation with him, he tells us about his most memorable lobster catch. He speaks of an area of our Caribbean Sea where lobsters were once in such abundance that the vibrant corals were unseen. Carlos Arevalo, experienced fisher from Corozal District, tells us of how quickly he used to fill a dorey with conch in one spot on the waters. He could return with his fresh catch after just a few hours on the waters.

However, those memories are very different today. Now, the fishers speak of dwindling stocks and longer trips farther into the blue just to find the same species that once hooked their lines and filled their traps closer to shore. And as more Belizeans turn to fishing to earn a living or for recreation, the catch grows smaller with each trip.

Yet, amid the uncertainty, fishers still hold onto hope. They haven’t given up on the sea that sustains their families and communities. Fishers believe that with stronger fisheries management, better enforcement from authorities, and more inclusive decision-making, Belize’s fisheries can recover and return to what it once was. But to see this happen, fishers want a seat at the table. They want to ensure that whatever policies are being implemented reflect their voices and protects stocks for generations to come.

You see, having fishers’ voices heard is not just about what’s been lost, it’s about what can still be restored. Listen to their stories…
