Every year, Oceana recognizes Belizeans for their incredible work and commitment in protecting Belize’s waters This year at the 15th Ocean Hero Awards, two remarkable people got their well-deserved recognition: Jose “Elito” Arceo and Dennis Garbutt. These two have spent decades fighting for and caring for Belize’s marine ecosystems, it’s been their life’s work.
Jose “Elito” Arceo is a name long associated with marine conservation in Belize, particularly on his island home, Ambergris Caye. As co-owner of SEAduced, he has used his platform as a tour operator to champion responsible coastal development and shine a light on the threats facing Belize’s marine ecosystems. He has consistently spoken out against offshore oil, destructive coastal development, and mangrove deforestation, ensuring that community voices were heard in major environmental decisions.
Dennis Garbutt has shaped national conservation policy through decades of determined advocacy and leadership. His influence reaches far beyond his hometown of Punta Gorda, touching the global fly-fishing community. Among anglers worldwide, Dennis and his brothers are legendary. So much so that fishing with them is considered a bucket-list experience. But for Dennis, the work is about more than reputation; it’s about heart.
Elito and Dennis embody the power of passion and purpose. Their work shows that true guardianship comes from the heart, inspiring hope and unity in using our voices to protect what we love.
